As you probably know by now, the Norwex mission is all about reducing chemicals in our homes. We do that by focusing on mechanical cleaning using microfiber and water alone. Our microfiber can be used in a variety of ways to do everyday cleaning chores, but how about things like laundry, dishes, or mattress cleaning? Welcome to a safe, natural, and sustainable choice… enzymes.
Enzymes are used to perform specific functions depending on the need. Our products typically contain several enzyme types to create a unique blend that ensures optimal cleaning and performance. So, what exactly are enzymes?
Enzymes are proteins that act as natural catalysts to efficiently break down dirt and stains so that they wash way more easily.
Because enzymes can target specific proteins, fats, and other organic matter, they provide many advantages over synthetic cleaning chemicals. They’re also much more compatible with the environment as they don’t release phosphates or other impurities.
Why does Norwex use enzymes?
Enzymes are so efficient at breaking down organic stains, just a small amount can provide significant cleaning benefits. This offsets large amounts of chemical ingredients required for many products to be effective.
- Incorporating enzymes allows for the reduction of harmful ingredients.
- Enhanced cleaning power in more compact products reduces environmental impact.
- Natural, not petroleum-based.
- Biodegradable and milder than harsh surfactants.
- Safe for humans and the environment with proven low toxicity.
Because a single enzyme will typically catalyze around 10,000 chemical reactions per second, only a tiny amount is needed to have a huge effect, making them perfect for concentrated products. In fact, multi-enzyme blends can replace up to 25% of the surfactants in a typical laundry detergent without compromising the cleaning effect, resulting in a more sustainable, yet effective, detergent.
We use biotics in some of our household products to help enzymes function more efficiently and to reduce harmful chemicals, but more about that another time.
