It may be hard to imagine that before 1970, a factory could spew black clouds of toxic smoke into the air or dump tons of toxic waste into a nearby stream, and that was perfectly legal.
At that time, there was no EPA, no Clean Air Act, no Clean Water Act. There were no legal or regulatory mechanisms to protect our environment.
In spring 1970, Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day as a way to force this issue onto the national agenda. We have made great strides, but there will always be more to do.
I am so proud to be part of a company whose mission is to support our planet. Here are my top five favorite products that do just that. Yes, it might require a bit of rethinking and doing things differently, but isn’t our world worth it? Of course it is!
Laundry
Did you know 700 plastic laundry jugs end up in North American landfills each year? And 30 billion loads of laundry each year are done by North Americans – often with detergents that contain harmful chemicals, synthetic fragrances or fillers that can clog pipes.
There is a better way, and the choice is yours. Powder, liquid, sheets… all are cleaner, safer for you, and better for our planet. Check out this one-page detergent and booster laundry guide so you can customize based on your needs and preferences. Click Here
Counter Cloths
Paper towels are easy to grab, but at what cost? Most are made from virgin tree fiber and used only once. That’s certainly not a sustainable solution. Plus, one is often not enough for many jobs, and some brands are even bleached with harmful chlorinated compounds – not good for your family or the environment.
Counter Cloths are super-absorbent and quickly absorb spills and messes much more sustainably. They dry fast and you can use them multiple times before laundering.
As with our other microfiber, they also feature BacLock® our antimicrobial agent which protects the cloths by winning the fight against odor-causing bacteria in the cloths, helping them to stay fresher longer.
They come as a set of three or get a set of six with their very own house. Here is a short video that explains BacLock® and how it works. Go ahead… it’s less than a minute. Click Here
UltraZyme
UltraZyme Dishwasher Powder is a powerful, enzyme-based detergent that gets your dishes clean and sparkling without harmful chemicals. This enzyme formula also does double-duty by cleaning your machine – keeping your dishwasher in great shape. The enzyme-based formula dissolves food debris on dishes while also working to remove buildup and odors inside your dishwasher, it’s biodegradable formula, contains a built-in water softener, and is safe for septic systems.
Produce Bags
Regular plastic produce bags contain harmful chemicals, are hard to recycle and end up in our landfills. These non-toxic bags are safer for you and the family and better for the environment by helping reduce plastic waste. You can rinse and air-dry or throw them into the laundry.
Napkins
I used to go through SO many napkins. They were always on the shopping list just like the paper towels. No more! These cloth napkins have been a game changer for me. They wash great too. These napkins are a great opportunity to ditch and switch for little cost, but still big impact on waste and will save you money in the long run.
These are only a few of my favorites. There are many more: silicone bags and containers, stainless steel straws, and cutting boards made from natural materials. Where are your opportunities? What needs replacing? Where are your biggest concerns? What just doesn’t work for you and want something better?
When we know better, we do better!
